This will kill off any chance he had of buying into any MLB baseball team.

Usually a buyer's group has a puppet type owner, a celebrity to give a face to the group. That's all Gwynn's there for. Of course the SD public loves him, and would want to have him as an owner. He probably wouldn't need any money of his own, and would end up making money with it. so it doesn't kill off his chance or really impede it, unless he got his debt to criminal proportions.

Just needs to hire one of those firms that *negotiates* with the IRS. He could probably get off the hook for a small fraction of that.

Tony Glynn makes $115,000 as a baseball coach at San Diego State. He also currently makes $40,000 for speaking appearances, $200,000 from the Padres, $60,000 for work for a car dealership and $135,000 for TV appearances. During his long baseball career he made millions. In his last ten years in baseball his salary varied between $2 million and $6 million. Unless he disputes the amount owed he should write the government a check, just like millions of other taxpayers do.

This story doesn't claim that he is broke or unable to pay the debt.  It simply states he has debt.  Many people have debt and live with debt.  Some of the richest billionaires in the world operate strickly on leverage.

This is a non-story.  Essentially, an irrelevant waste of good virtual space.

This won't Kill any intent by Tony to buy into a team, he owes the IRS money much like many people who make this kind of money often do. They try to get away with things on Tax Returns or might have forgotten about a speaking engagement or two that he was payed nicely for. I would think Tony had a CPA do his taxes and didn't use turbo tax or tax cut software programs and this CPA tried to get away with a little to much, or perhaps he cashed in a 4 million dollar IRA a bit early.... But writing that he will lose his current job or cost him a stake in future ownership is not really true. He is more like a Puppet like Chuck said above.

The IRS offers easy convenient payment plans for those individuals who are in arrears. All Tony has to do is come clean, start making payments and Uncle Sam will be more than happy to take his name off the books. Tony will be forgiven by patriotic Americans.

MLB should not permit a prospective co-owner who has been in arrears on Federal taxes in six figures for up to 8 years. San Diego fans should remember the embarassing bankruptcy that allegedly resulted from Gwynn's wife mishandling investments. Gwynn is only a front for prospective investors and perhaps the best course is for Gwynn to decline involvment in bidding for the Padres.

Reports are that he owes back taxes for the years 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2010. That shows a pattern of underpayment of his taxes.

This isnt a trivial matter. Pete Rose went to prison for failing to report income he received for appearances at a card show where he signed autographs. Rose spent 5 months at a Federal Penitentiary for tax evasion.

AZ Realtor--As a CPA myself, the IRS doesn't care who does your taxes.  It's the taxpayer's obligation under the law to make sure that they are correct.  Using a CPA doesn't excuse that obligation in the slightest.

Parrish4Prez, I'm intrigued by your comment "it's the taxpayer's obligation to make sure they are correct." That couldn't be further from the truth. Someone very very close to me, a lifetime friend, is a CPA, and we've had this conversation many times. The taxpayer's responsibility is to provide truthful information to the CPA and to pay anything that is the due. But, the act of doing the tax return correctly.....i.e. using legitimate deductions, etc..... is 100% solely on the shoulders of the CPA. Yes, the IRS is going to hold the taxpayer liable. They aren't going to go after the CPA. However, the law allows the taxpayer to then hold the CPA responsible if the tax return was done incorrectly. Otherwise, why get a CPA ? If I'm a taxpayer who is going to have to research the laws and the return to make sure the CPA did it correctly, why wouldn't I just do it myself??

Maybe the tax returns were correct. But Mr. Gwynn just didn't pay the liability due as indicated on the return. In any case, just another typical former pro athlete who can't keep his finances in order. I'd be willing to bet he bounces checks, he's behind on his credit card and auto payments, etc, etc. Just as dumb as a rock. If these guys hadn't become pro athletes they'd be dumping trash for a living.
