Please keep talking, Gordon Gee

Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee says the NCAA had no precedent for giving Ohio State a bowl ban -- and for a change, Gordon Gee is right.

Has a school ever been busted because its head coach knew about violations by the team's best three or four players, didn't report those violations, then built a BCS-bowl season around those three or four illegally eligible players?

Has that ever happened?

No. It has not.

So E. Gordon Gee is right when he says, and I quote, "I'm a lawyer. I take a look at precedent. There's no precedent for a bowl ban for us."

So true, E. Gordon. No precedent for any of this.

I bet you were one dandy of a lawyer.

Next, try public speaking. You're the best I've ever seen at it.

I wish I had seen this when it came out.  As long as Mark Emmert is the President of the NCAA, and the cheating of the Jim Tressel era is within the statute of limitations, Gordon Gee will have a job.  If Ohio fires Gee, Emmert will give Ohio what they deserved in the first place: real punishment.

Gee and Emmert are BFF'S, two peas in a pod, joined at the hip, or whatever other tired cliche one wants to use.   Gee's presence was a major factor in THE Ohio State University getting away with ten years of cheating and receiving a minimal "punishment."  They have Urban Meyer and a top ten recruiting class: how effective was their "punishment" when it put them in a better position than they were with Tressel?

Gordon Gee will keep talking.  And stonewallling.  And denying that his school ever cheated even a little bit, what alone as prolifically as any school in the history of the NCAA that isn't named Alabama or USC.

If law was based solely on precedent, then guess what?  No decisions would EVER be rendered!  Original and reasonable decisions need to be rendered before they can be used for precedent.

Malaise_blue, while what you say is correct, anyone with the slightest knowledge of our legal system knows that precedents are relied upon heavily.  There have been several other programs hit with the NCAA's "Failure to Monitor" allegation, including at least two in the last 5 years, and none of them have ever been hit with a bowl ban until now.  Gordon Gee is correct in what he said.  There are plenty of precedents for comparable allegation levels, but there is no precedent for issuing a bowl ban.  Until now.  The NCAA clearly ramped up its punitive level in this case, primarily to save face as a result of unrelenting media pressure on the NCAA's reputation.  I doubt the media, lead by CBS and ESPN who both have a vested financial interest in the SEC, would have mounted nearly as aggressive of a smear campaign had OSU been in the SEC.  Much of this is aimed at taking viewers (and therefore money) away from the Big Ten Network, who they view as competition.

That said, some things are better left unsaid, and Gee's comment is one of them.

BTW, your school is guilty of cheating too.  All those extra hours of practice and having coaches coach during the off-season (when it is not permitted) is cheating any way you cut it.  That is why scUM is on probation for major violations.  So cut the sanctimonious BS, and stop throwing stomes from your glass house.

Agred, I think Dr. Gee made a fool of himself and the university. His "I hope he dosen't fire me" comment, will go down in the history of stupid quotations.

Please stick to running the university Gordon

Amazing that once someone survives a major scandal with their job, that they quickly forget what almost happened. Gordon Gee obviously didn't learn much from the fiasco that engulfed the Ohio State football program and only he knows how close he may have come to not keeping his job over it. Not to mention his other untimely and ill advised comments about the "sister's of the poor" etc. I don't recall hearing such comments from other university presidents/chancellors and I'm guessing it's because they leave the football to the coach, just as the coach leaves running the university to him/her. I think Dr. Gee needs to let Urban Myer run the football team and concentrate his efforts on running the university.

Fair and NCAA?   Really that is like Peanut Butter and Fish or Summer and Snowboards.    There is nothing fair about either the NCAA or what Ohio State did.    The NCAA enforcement is unpredicatable, the rules are crazy, silly and many programs drive a truck through the intent of the rules.  The small schools can get a break unless they join a big conference, players can not sell stuff they are given or have a job, and coaches who make the big money generally get away with breaking the rules,  except the Ohio State coach.    I am not a fan of Big College football but complaining about not being fair,  get real.

Trust us, Pimpinnati we ALL know everything in Columbus has a price. It's too bad that Buckeye fan can't see past the nuts hanging from around their neck to know what Tressel did was horrific and Gordon Gee is an idiot. If you don't believe the second one, just wait for him to open up his mouth again.

Marge Schott...er...Gordon Gee is a dolt.  If law was based solely on precedent, then guess what?  No decisions would EVER be rendered!  Original and reasonable decisions need to be rendered before they can be used for precedent.  Does he think that this situation wasn't resolved in a reasonable matter?  Lying, cheating and basically stealing being punished?  What an idiot.  Keep talking Marge.  Every time you open your mouth the entire Ohio State family suffers for it...
