Notre Dame wins, crisis averted

PITTSBURGH -- Tommy Rees wasn't good for long, but he was good enough -- for long enough -- to save Notre Dame on Saturday against Pittsburgh.

Rees, who has replaced Dayne Crist as the Irish's starting quarterback, was mostly awful on Saturday but summoned a perfect drive in the fourth quarter -- going 8-for-8, and also connecting on the two-point conversion after his touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Eifert -- to rally Notre Dame past Pittsburgh 15-12.

Other than that drive, the Notre Dame offense was one play, a 79-yard burst off tackle by short-yardage back (!) Jonas Gray for a 7-3 Irish lead early in the second quarter.

Other than that drive, Rees was unremarkable. He was 15-for-32 for 137 yards and two turnovers -- an interception and a fumble. Rees has committed nine turnovers in four games, and had he not led that late TD drive, this week would have been full of talk of a quarterback controversy in South Bend, not to mention a 1-3 season going nowhere in the second year under Brian Kelly. Who would have been described, probably, as "embattled."

Instead, a 2-2 start for the Irish ought to become 4-2 after games with Purdue and Air Force, and after that who knows? A hot team is a confident team is a dangerous team.

Notre Dame wins, crisis averted

Crist has had plenty of chances to lead this offense.  He's failed more often than not.  Rees, on the other hand, might not be pretty to watch, but he is 6-1 as a starter and has 2 more years of eligibility.  Do you really want to hand the ball back over to the guy that has never lived up to the hype that proceeded him and has blown out two knees in as many years? As long as Rees finds a way to win, I'm happy, and so should any other self-respecting ND fan.

Notre Dame wins, crisis averted

Write about something else besides Notre Dame and if you just have to write about them - do some actual research and see how they threatened a tiny Catholic school in El Paso _Cathedral HIgh into changing its Fighting Irish Logo  ( which they had for 89 years).  Why do sportswriters have to be so boring and predictable.. adn lazy?

I agree. The second I saw Rees stroll out on to the field at half time of the SFU game I just hung my head. For as much as people have bashed Crist for his play, comparing the two side by side he is much better than Rees. Crist may miss a throw or two but he doesn't turn the ball over. Rees is averaging 3 turnovers a game for his career!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know Kelly is a proven winner but I seriously doubt his decision making with Rees. Even if Crist isnt the guy go with Hendrix. He at least gives the running option this offense calls for and adds another demention to the game.

Crist should be the starting quarterback.  Rees has 9 turnovers to 1 for Crist.  The only reason Rees won last year at the end was because the defense finally rose to the ocassion.   Kelly is an idiot who is going to eventually get fired because of his stubborn acts.  He does not support Crist for whatever reason and he recruited Rees so he will live and die with Rees.   Hopefully he will find out how wrong he is,  Defense needs to go back and see the films from the last 4 games of last year.

Notre Dame wins, crisis averted

I hate the Domers and want them to lose every game, but they are good on offense.  I believe that they need to calm down and stop making huge mistakes.  If they do this, they are good enough to be a top 10 team.  The talent is there, but the maturity just is not and that is their one big problem!

Notre Dame wins, crisis averted

Notre Dame is not a BCS team. They are 2-2 and were lucky to win today. Take off the rose colored glasses and put down the kool aid.

As bad as Rees is, compared to Pitt's Sunseri, he's a all- american!

Sunseri cannot throw any 20+ yard throws. 3rd & 10, screens for 4 yards. Coach has 0 confidence in him, cannot make knows for offense. Rolls him out/takes 1/2 field away all the time for short quick 5-7 yd throws. Its so bad, since their 3rd string has best arm, but never plays???????

He is the definition of ball control QB! He cannot win a game for you, no matter opponent

So ND fans, it could be much worse....    &n

But no National Championship AGAIN!  Crisis not averted, when you looked at the first four games before the season started everyone had ND at 4-0.
