U.S. women making soccer fun (really)

Posted on: July 13, 2011 2:15 pm

This U.S. women's soccer team is fun to watch, and not just because it wins. Although winning is fun. I've seen comments below similar stories like this one of mine, readers wondering how I could be so blatantly biased.

I'm an American. That's an American team. I tell you my bias up front. Any more questions? Good, we'll continue ...

This team is fun because it plays a different brand of soccer than I'm used to seeing from U.S. teams, male or female. Past American sides have played futbol like Ohio State plays football -- conservatively, smartly, boringly. Keep it close, and then win because you're more disciplined than the other team.

When it works, fine. I guess. But it's not fun.

This U.S. women's team is fun -- and just one victory away from another World Cup title. The Americans beat France 3-1 on Wednesday to advance to the final on Sunday.

And they did it Wednesday as they did it a few days ago against Brazil, with more vision and creativity than outright skill. We're not the most talented side. We're not even the most talented American women's side. The 1991 World Cup team that had Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, Kristine Lilly, Julie Foudy -- and more -- was more talented than this one. Of course, that team was more talented than anyone, bludgeoning its World Cup foes by a combined score of 25-5.

This team isn't winning with superior talent -- Brazil and France both looked better -- but with vision, imagination and uncanny finishing.

The Americans take chances -- we take chances -- and we make them pay off. It's dangerous, but it's working. And win or lose, it's awesome to watch.

U.S. women making soccer fun (really)

Wow...where to begin...

FACT - liberals love to attack the messenger, calling them names as you have done here, rather than addressing the issues
This sword cuts both ways.  Meet the firm of O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck and Dobbs.

FACT - Rush Limbaugh is the most-listened to and most successful radio program in history, which BY DEFINITION makes him mainstream
Actually, this is not a fact.  Arbitron says that "American Top 40" has more weekly listeners, by about 33 percent.

Now, one could argue that the demographics of the typical AT40 audience might make it less than ideal for determining what the "average American" likes or believes.  Of course, one could easily extend this argument to the typical Limbaugh audience.  But I digress.  :-D

FACT - Fox News has more viewers every night than any other cable news station which BY DEFINITION makes them mainstream
This is half fact.  The first half is completely factual...but the key word in it is "cable".

In terms of Nielsen share, ABC, CBS, and NBC news programs all crush cable, across the board.  By THAT definition (which seems much more complete), any cable news network (FNC, MSNBC, HLN, or whatever) is simply not on the same playing field.

FACT - George W. Bush received more popular votes than any president in the history of our republic so one could easily argue he's the most popular president ever, inspite of what the media thinks about him
2004 Presidential election:  George W. Bush received about 62 million popular votes (50.7%).
2008 Presidential election:  Barack Obama received about 69.5 million popular votes (52.9%).

Quick test:  69,500,000 is (greater than, less than, equal to) 62,000,000.  :-D

And, if analyzed by vote percentage, George Washington was our most popular president ever, having received 100% of the Electoral College vote twice.  Pretty sure that won't be happening again.

(BONUS FACT - we are not a democracy)
So far, this is the only thing you've gotten completely right.

FACT - women's sports do not fill arenas, even when no admission is charged
I'm pretty sure the NCAA Women's Final Four sells out every year.  And top women's college basketball programs (think UConn, Stanford, Duke, Tennessee, Baylor) fill their arenas and draw heavily on the road too.  In the US, though, I think you have this mostly right.

FACT - women's sports do not attract viewers (check the ratings)
Unless it's a top-level event, this is correct.  The drop in skill levels from the upper echelon in most women's sports is too big to hold most casual viewers' interest.  Even the Women's Top 25 in basketball is really more like the "Top 6 And Everyone Else".

FACT - women's sports get into major venues and on television anyway
You seem surprised by this.  A shade more than 50% of the country is female.  Of COURSE women's sports will get on TV.  What do you expect?
FACT - just becuse you keep denying reality doesn't change reality
Review your first four "facts" in your screed.  Then, repeat the following phrase to yourself one hundred times:  "Pot, kettle, black."
Also, homosexuals, illegal aliens and other minorities don't want EQUAL rights, they want SPECIAL rights.  Can you give one example of where a gay man doesn't have the same rights as a regular one?
I'll take "DUH...Marriage!" for $200, Alex.

(C'mon...you make this too easy.  Do better next time, OK?)

<<FACT - liberals love to attack the messenger, calling them names as you have done here, rather than addressing the issues>>

Really, really... so Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity don't name call?  This arguement goes both ways, sorry this is no fact.  It's like saying liberals breathe air, but failing to mention so does everyone else.

<<FACT - Rush Limbaugh is the most-listened to and most successful radio program in history, which BY DEFINITION makes him mainstream>>

It is estimated by the Limbaugh Institute that Rush has about 20 million listeners weekly (Arbitron ratings suggest it's closer to 15 million). It is also estimated that there are between 18-24 million homosexuals in the United States.  By your logic that makes homosexuality mainstream.

<<FACT - Fox News has more viewers every night than any other cable news station which BY DEFINITION makes them mainstream>>

BUT, it doesn't make them right.

<<FACT - George W. Bush received more popular votes than any president in the history of our republic so one could easily argue he's the most popular president ever, inspite of what the media thinks about him (BONUS FACT - we are not a democracy)>>

Actually, according to the US Govt Barack Obama received the more votes that any president in history, so one really couldn't argue that Bush is the most popular president ever.  The most popular president would have been LBJ who received 61% of the popular vote.

<<FACT - women's sports do not fill arenas, even when no admission is charged>>
Agreed

<<FACT - women's sports do not attract viewers (check the ratings)>>
For the most part agreed, with a few special event exceptions

<<FACT - women's sports get into major venues and on television anyway>>
Agreed, but so do some other non-mainstream sports

<<FACT - just becuse you keep denying reality doesn't change reality>>
And just because you say it is a fact, doesn't make it so.

<<Also, homosexuals, illegal aliens and other minorities don't want EQUAL rights, they want SPECIAL rights.  Can you give one example of where a gay man doesn't have the same rights as a regular one>>

I keep hearing this, but exactly what special rights do they want?  Please be specific.

When he wants to marry the person he loves?

Finally, if you check ESPN's ratings, I think you will see that as ESPN and others push women's "sports" they do alienate their audience and guys turn the channel, but hey, Nike and others will still buy those ads to help push that separate but equal agenda.

ESPN is all about the Benjamins, Cuda, as are those companies you cited. Their non-existent "agendas" are loss leaders for what, exactly?

Sorry if the mainstream media offends you so but it still represents the majority point of view on these issues. If it didn't people woudn't watch/read/isten. For folks like yourself, there is the alternative media like FOX News, right-wing radio, and whatever crap Andrew Breitbart can throw on his websites without getting sued for libel.

Sorry, pal, but culturally speaking, the majority still rules, and we say that folks like you represent a dying ideology of intolerance and irrationality toward gays. The majority of Americans believe that the 14th Amendment applies to all citizens.

But, hey...feel free to prove us wrong any time. Just remember: that would require facts, sources, and a rational argument -- not merely repeating the same talking points over and over again.

Yankee (of COURSE you are a Yankee) -

I think its pretty well-documented that women's sports are financially unviable, a drain on collegiate resources and a waste of taxpayer dollars (in the case of state schools).  The fact that the government forces schools to carry these programs when no one cares, watches, supports or shows up says they are not mainstream.  And we won't even get into the hypocrisy of their premise - separate but equal - which I thought we as a country already decided was bad.

Also, if you don't think the media is pushing the homosexual agenda you are not paying attention.  Let someone like DeSean Jackson or Jokim Noah say something percieved to be a gay slur and this site, amoung others, will make it front-page news and a national outrage, when, of course it isn't.  They are also openly rooting for an openly gay man in a real sport so they can make that person some kind of civil right hero, which of course won't be true, desipite thier pushing of the story.

Finally, if you check ESPN's ratings, I think you will see that as ESPN and others push women's "sports" they do alienate their audience and guys turn the channel, but hey, Nike and others will still buy those ads to help push that separate but equal agenda.

Glad I could provide your morning chuckle.  Hope you didn't choke on your extra-light-double-espresso-vanilla

-mocha-latte-thingy.  And I apologize for the typos, I will try harder in the future.

Ha! : )

33037 Cuda, thank you for the wonderful laugh this morning. It's always a chuckle to see how seriously some people skew any bit of news to forward their own agenda. I mean, come on, no one could really mistake women's soccer to a push by leftist or socialist forces, could they? Ha! I guess there's one in every bunch (or one on every blog, to post comments like yours).

One small flaw in your statement... "like the fact that ESPN, NIKE and anothers [sic] DO want to expand their customer base by getting women, gays, etc. into sports so they push those agendas in spite of what mainstreamn America may think or the market will bear." Geez.. everyone's trying to talk like an economist these days. Ridiculous. Oh, the point... where in the heck is the "fact" in your comment? Okay so businesses want to expand their market base. We'll take that as a given. But how does that translate to ESPN, Nike (only the "N" is capitalized, by the way) and others pushing gay and women's rights? If mainstream America felt as you do (they don't, I can assure you, but let's play along)... If mainstream America felt as you do, wouldn't this organizations fear alienating their marketbase by pushing these agendas? Are they pushing these agendas? Your statement is a ridiculous assumption, and by no means a "fact".

Given the dogma that oozes from your post, I'm not surprised that you confuse your assumptions and paranoia with "fact", but please don't try to dress it up as some grand economic insight or attempt to bludgeon other posters over the head with your obtuse thinking.

Hey Okakura - I see you have adopted the leftist strategy of shooting the messenger.  Call me all the names you want but if you want to make a point how about including some facts.  Like the fact that ESPN, NIKE and anothers DO want to expand their customer base by getting women, gays, etc. into sports so they push those agendas in spite of what mainstream America may think or the market will bear.  Have you ever thought about how much taxpaer money is wasted at state schools because of title IX - creating separate but equal sports programs that are economically unviable while the government is broke? You can keep your hat, tin man - or is it scarecrow?

No self-respecting dude I know would be caught dead watching it.  In spite of several generations of the sexist taxpayer-dollar-wasting Title IX and in spite of generations of kids being fored to play soccer - the socialist sport where no one scores and much of the time no one wins or loses - soccer and especially girls soccer is still irrelevant outside of left-leaning and left-pushing places like sports retailers (espn, nike, etc) who want to double their customer base.
"Socialist sport?" "Left-leaning retailers?" Why not just claim that women's soccer is threatening the American way of life! Yell

You are a far-right wing caricature come to life, Cuda, and I for one couldn't be more entertained by your inane rants. If you post your address, I'll send you a tin hat!
