Anderson Varejao, the new $50 million man? Anderson Varejao?

Seriously?

Anderson Varejao is bad. As in, not good. He's a triple threat -- he can't pass, handle or shoot.

He's not worth $50 million over six years. He's not worth $50 million over 60 years.

Here's where you tell me to shut up, that Cleveland GM Danny Ferry knows more basketball than I do. And maybe you're right. Then again, Ferry's the one who thought the corpse known as Zydrunas Ilgauskas could compete in the NBA playoffs. And Ferry's the one who just gave Anderson Varejao $50 million.

Thanks for ruining my vacation, Ferry. I was relaxing. By the pool. Sipping Shirley Temple. Even having a drink, too. (Rim shot.) But I had to come off vacation to write about this. About the end of the world as we know it. About Anderson Varejao getting $50 million to average six points and six rebounds per game.

Imagine if he averaged nine and nine. They'd rename the team after him.

Reminds me of the Atlanta Hawks when they signed Jon Koncak, $6million of 6 years in 1989. With this deal "Jon Contract" was paid more than MJ, Larry Bird and Magic!!!!! Sunk the Hawks from making any FA deals for a years later.

Very similar stats Koncak and Varejao.....6 points 6 rebounds.....for a bench player

Add 5 mins and you pick up 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds and defense.....thus a 10.5, 10.5 guy and growing.sonnybono,

You still don't pay a guy who is only going to give you those numbers $10 million/year. Look at some of the guys who just signed mid-level contracts at 5.6 million. Anderson Varejao is not half as good as those guys...and he's a defensive liability.

I dont like Varejao as a player. I'd take almost any pf over him. But his contract is only 42 million guaranteed. And so he's making 7 mil a year without incentives. And I doubt he meets those anyway. There isnt much out there for the Cavs to grab anyway. So Ferry probably had to make sure they at least had Varejao so there wouldnt be a major hole at pf. Otherwise all we'd have is Hickson, Jackson, and Shaq. Everyone else is gone.

So even though I cant stand Varejao, analyze the situation from a gm standpoint and answer this question. What else is out there? Is there any player significantly better than Varejao that we would be front runners in? Mcdyess and Wallace gone. Brandon Bass will go elsewhere. Anyone else? Exactly. We can sign Varejao and still use our mle to fill another need.

Again dont get me wrong I know Varejao stinks. But its about whats available and not having holes in your roster. You think if there was someone better than Varejao we could go after that we wouldnt? You want Hickson or Darnell Jackson starting at the pf? Now maybe later in the season Hickson could. But he's coming off an injury. And Jackson is more offensively challenged than Varejao. So right now we have a starting frontcourt which is alot better than last year with Shaq as a major upgrade over Z. Plus our bench's depth is one player away from being ok with Z off the bench now.

Were about to sign Parker who is the lengthy guard that can defend bigger guards for us and shoot the 3. Even though he's not athletic he definitely fills a need. Because Pietrus and Turkoglu hurt us last year. Pietrus hurt us more since West locked down Turk most of the time. He just used the pick and roll well and Z couldnt keep up with Howard or Turk around the corner.

We are looking at Kleiza as well. A guy who we should be drooling over because he can come score 20 pts on some nights even though his defense sucks. Also I'd be looking at Von Wafer amongst the others as well. Young cheap athletic guards to increase our depth. Pretty much the Cavs starting lineup is locked in.

c Shaq pf Varejao sf Lebron sg West pg Williams bench Z, Gibson, Hickson, Kinsey.

Not much more Ferry can do here. Hopefully Varejao works on that awful outside shot and adds some bulk to his body. He is young and can improve. But the Cavs arent finished yet. Theres been a rumor of a sign and trade involving Gerald Wallace and Wally. Stay tuned.
